Lanikai is absolutely one of the most beautiful beaches we’ve ever been to. In Town, the beaches are great because they’re so calm, but they’re often pebbly and crowded. Lanikai has white, baby powder-soft sand and the characteristic sea-green water for which the islands are so revered. The bonus is that if you go during the week when school is in session, you’re almost guaranteed to have the beach to yourselves! There isn’t shade on this beach, so bring your umbrellas!
When we first moved here, each time we visited the area, we noticed a hiking ridge with blue buildings along the trail. Eventually we discovered that these were called the Lanikai “Pillboxes”, old World War II bunkers. It appears to be a pretty popular trail, and it was really beautiful looking out across the ocean from the top, so it’s easy to see why people are drawn to it.
We hike with a Kelty child carrier, and it was definitely needed on this hike, as it was fairly steep and rocky in several places. I can also advise that it’s very warm, so if you’re ever in the neighborhood, go first thing in the morning and bring plenty of agua and sunscreen!
